The vanilla which is known as the Prince of spice can be cultivated in Hambantota district, says senior farmers in Hambantota district.

They say that the climate of Hambantota district is conducive for the cultivation of vanilla and if the state's and the export agriculture department's assistance are received this crop can be cultivated at commercial level in the district.

A planter who wished to remain anonymous said that aroma of Sri Lankan vanilla is notably attractive. He said that vanilla is a small farmers' beverage crop with high industrial potential.
