Chamikara Weerasinghe
Patriotic National Movement (PNM) President Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera
yesterday said maintaining tax reserves and the process of taxation is
done by Parliament and it is of utmost important that the Government
generates a steady flow of revenue to crush terrorism at this last
stage.
"I am not too sure whether it is possible to make any peace meal
adjustments to Budget proposals," he said.
"We all have to agree that the Government needs funds to continue its
humanitarian operations in the North and East to liberate the country
from terrorism.
It is important that we all be prepared to make sacrifices towards
that end," he said.
Dr. Amarasekera further said, "The process of taxation is not to be
taken lightly by any party wishing to protect the country and its
sovereignty at this juncture where the Security Forces have achieved
stunning success against the enemy."
"Instead, they must act rationally to promote and increase the
Government's revenue to carry out its operations to crush LTTE
terrorism," he added.
