Lankan with Canadian passport held
A 53-year-old Sri Lankan woman holding a Canadian passport was
arrested by the City Crime Bureau (CCB) in Chennai on Sunday for
allegedly cheating a Sri Lankan Tamil, Kuladeepan of Colombo, of Rs 6.30
lakhs, with a promise of getting him a job in Canada.
Sharmila, who came out of jail only four months ago after her arrest
in another cheating case, was trapped by the police at a hotel in T
Nagar, where she had gone to receive money from a Sri Lankan Tamil,
Kaleesh.
Sharmila, from Jaffna, came to India in 1989 and lived in Salem with
her family till her daughter was married. In 1993, she migrated to
Canada and worked there in a company, eventually obtaining Canadian
citizenship.
However, due to ill health she came back to Chennai in 2007, took up
a house and lived with her 18- year old son Sarjan. Subsequently, she
shifted to Maraimalainagar. Earlier this year, she was arrested for
cheating a Sri Lankan Tamil by promising him a Canadian visa.
After her release from jail, she collected Rs 6.30 lakhs from
Kuladeepan in three instalments, after he approached her for a job in
Canada. Since she did not get him the promised job and also refused to
pay back the money, Kuladeepan approached the CCB.
