CAA collects Rs. 10 million

COLOMBO: The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has collected fines
amounting to Rs. 10 million up to August this year, imposed on errant
traders following public complaints.
According to the CAA sources, nearly 200 public complaints had been
received by the Authority on a single day agains unfair trade practices
of errant traders. Meanwhile, the CAA has decided to take stern actions
against traders who violated the CAA Act. The Authority has been planned
to conduct about 900 raids during the festive season.
The Authority as per the mandate given to it, has taken steps for the
protection of the consumer against unfair trading. It has conducted 2160
raids and has filed cases against errant traders in the Magistrate’s
Courts until August this year.
The CAA is engaged in publishing the names and address of traders
convicted in Courts for the violation of the provisions of the Act.
Rice was specified as an essential item by Trade, Marketing
Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula
Gunawardena by issuing the gazette notification in consultation with the
Authority.
