20th National Youth Sports Festival:
Kurunegala District with a total of 80 points carried away the
overall championship of the 20th National Youth Sports Festival which
concluded yesterday at the D. A. Rajapaksa stadium in Beliatta. The
champions were followed by Galle (72) and Hambantota (68).
Meanwhile Kurunegala District won the youth championship with a
collection of 38 points and Ratnapura District became the under 20
championship with a total of 35 points.
The two final events, the 4 X 400 relays for Boys won by Puttalam
District U-20 and the youth from Nuwara Eliya District.
Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala were the runners-up in the under 20
category. Ratnapura and Kurunegala ended behind Nuwara Eliya in the
youth event.
Minister for Youth Affairs Pavithra Wanniarachchi was the chief guest
on the final day and gave away the awards. Bashwara Guneratne, Chairman
National Youth Council, Southern Province sports Minister V. K. Indika
and Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs S. Wirithamulla were the
guests of honour.
H.M.D. Prabodhini of Ampara District came up with a brilliant
performance to win the 5000m walk. Her timing for the event was 30:39.8
secs which is a fine time when considering the conditions that was
available during the event.
The race began with no rain but with heavy rains coming down with
almost five laps to go. She continued gallantly holding onto the lead
she got in the early stage. In fact the weather was so heavy the track
completely under water when the event concluded. She could have improved
very much on her timing if the weather gods were favourable.
Meanwhile in the relays Hambantota girls had a good time of 4:22.3
secs on a soggy ground to win the 4x400m.
Volleyball -Hambantota spikers with top class game managed to
overcome the strong Gampaha District spikers to win the gold medal.
Meanwhile the Kurunegala girls defeated Kalutara District to win the
gold medal. Puttalam District girls and boys won the bronze medals for
volleyball.
Kabaddi -Colombo District with a good effort to defeated Batticaloa
District in the Kabaddi mens final to go with the gold. In the girls
category Galle District who collected the gold beating Nuwara Eliya in
the final.
