Shirley Wijesinghe
The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Public Health Department has
taken legal action against two supermarkets in Colombo for improper
storage of food items.
CMC Chief Medical Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam told the Daily News that
most supermarket owners keep fish and meat below the required
temperature level.
''Most shop owners usually keep both ice cream and meat or fish in
the same freezer or sometimes switch-off their freezers at night. This
is clearly against hygenic standards,'' Dr. Kariyawasam said.
Commenting on the possibility of a spread of mosquito borne epidemic
diseases after the prevailing rainy season, Dr. Kariyawasam said a 30
per cent increase of dengue has been reported in the city limits with
437 victims so far. It was 379 last year.
Eighteen rat fever cases have been reported and there were four
deaths among them. No Chikungunya cases have been reported so far this
year, he added.
