Jaffna: Relief for flood-hit, services restored
Security Forces Jaffna Commander Major General G.A. Chandrasiri held
discussions with the District Secretary for Jaffna K. Ganesh and other
Divisional Secretaries in the Jaffna district on the supply of
essentials, flood relief and other matters affecting the people.
Major General Chandrasiri briefed the meeting on measures so far
taken to alleviate the suffering of flood victims and also security
developments in the Jaffna peninsula. He also emphasised the need to
continue the uninterrupted supply of essentials to the peninsula.
Ganesh presented the meeting with a full account on the floods and
stormy weather and the numbers affected as a result.
The Security Forces Commander agreed to provide three water bowsers
to the Jaffna hospital at the request of its Director and over 50,000
chlorine tablets to purify water in affected wells.
The Commander urged officials to provide all essentials to the
restoration of Varani hospital and repair disrupted power lines within
48 hours. Representatives of the Jaffna Traders Association said stocks
in their stores are adequate for more than three months.
The supply of petroleum products, temporary ferry services, water
drainage systems, restoration of telephone lines, spread of contagious
diseases following floods, return of normality to town areas on a
priority basis, etc were also taken up during the meeting.
The weekend meeting at KKS was also attended by senior Army officers
including Divisional Commander of 51 Division and Brigade Commander of
515 Brigade, Director of Jaffna General Hospital, Engineers of the
Highways Department.
