BCIS languages awards ceremony
The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) will hold
its Languages Awards Ceremony today from 10.00 a.m. at the BCIS
auditorium.
First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy Gao Hua will be as the Chief
Guest while Lakshman Jayakody, Chairman, BCIS and advisor to the
President will be the Guest of Honour.
STC teacher felicitation
The Organising Committee of the Wardens Davidson, Selveratnam and
Anandanayagam Era Group of S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia, will hold
their Teachers' Felicitation ceremony on December 4 at 6.30 p.m. at
Sasakawa hall, Colombo 3.
All old boys, well-wishers and friends of the college are invited.
Magazine launch
'Dasu', a quarterly magazine by the Old Boys Association of Christ
Church College, Matale will be launched today at the college under the
patronage of old boy and former executive director of the Central Bank
of Ceylon E.M. Senanayake.
Principal T.B. Mediwaka and the OBA's President M.E. Pushpashantha
will be present.
Public lecture
The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) will host
Dr. Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, eminent South Asian scholar in International
Relations and Strategic Studies from the Islamabad Policy Research
Institute (IPRI) for a public lecture on the' Indo- Pakistan Peace
Process' on December 5.
Prof. Cheema is the President of IPRI in Pakistan; an independent
research institute dedicated to analyzing and evaluating important
national and international politico-strategic issues and developments
affecting Pakistan, South Asia, and the World.
Scholarships for students
The Central Province Independent Graduates' Association will award
scholarships to 50 students of low-income families at a ceremony at the
Vidyartha Vidyalaya auditorium, Kandy tomorrow under the patronage of
Central Province Chief Minister, Sarath Ekanayake.
Conference
The fourth International Conference of The Association for the Study
of Australasia in Asia (ASAA) will be held at Suisse Hotel, Kandy from
December 2 to 4. This conference is being held for the first time in Sri
Lanka will conclude with a visit to the Pemberley Writers Centre in
Haputale.
More than 50 papers on a number of subjects such as Literature,
Library Science, History, Politics and Diplomacy will be presented by
delegates from Australia, India, Malaysia, Canada, Spain, Iceland and
Sri Lanka.
Seminar
A seminar on `The Weligama Declaration and the Media's Role in
Building Sri Lankan unity' will be held at Marine Grand Hotel, 41,
Station Road, Wellawatta on Monday at 5.00 p.m. under the patronage of
President, Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity Imithiyas Bakeer
Markar.
Health camp
The Mabole Malay Association (MMA) will conduct a health camp for
underprivileged communities in and around Mabole on Sunday at the Al-Ashraff
Maha Vidyalaya, Mabole (opposite the Mabole mosque).
Four doctors - two eye surgeons, a dental surgeon and a general
physician will be present at the medical camp. Two nurses will be in
attendance along with the Red Cross team
Musical show
A musical show will be held at Sri Dharmaloka Hall of the Kelaniya
University on December 1 at 6.30 p.m.
Blood donation
A blood donation will be held at the Kelaniya University sports
grounds on December 1 at 8.30 am.
New stamp for Pieter Keuneman
The Posts and Telecommunications Ministry will issue a new postage
stamp to commemorate former Housing and Construction Minister Pieter
Keuneman. The cancellation of First Day Cover will be held at the
Library and Documentation Board at 3.30 p.m. on December 1.

Fowzie, Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Minister D. E.
W. Gunasekara and Pieter Keuneman Commemoration Committee Deputy
Secretary R. L. Stephen will participate.
FPA Sri Lanka commemorates World AIDS Day 2008
FPA Sri Lanka will commemorate World AIDS Day this year with a host
of programmes and events.
Stationery items will be distributed among the children of parents
from Lanka+ (a community of people living with HIV) and will culminate
with a ‘Kids Day’. This fun day out will focus on both entertainment and
education with visits to the Planetarium, Zoo, Park, Beach and Museum.
FPA Sri Lanka has established a strategic partnership with the
Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT) to carry out sexual
reproductive health (SRH) awareness in the plantation sector. In
comparison to other areas of the country, indicators reveal that this
sector has relatively low knowledge and access to SRH information and
services. Bicycles will be distributed to PHDT volunteers working for
the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
An awareness programme on ‘The Current Situation and New Trends of
HIV/AIDS’ will be held at the FPA Head Office, Bullers Lane and
conducted by Dr. Neil Rajaratne.
Tharunyata Hetak seminar
The Ampara district seminar on the GCE (O/L) Examination organised by
Tharunyata Hetak organisation on a concept of its President Namal
Rajapaksa, to improve the knowledge of students in rural schools with
less facilities, will be held at Uhana MV and Damana Uksiripura MV on
November 29 and 30 from 8.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
Old Scouts’ inaugural meeting
The inaugural meeting of the Colombo Branch of the Old Rajans Scout
Association of Dharmaraja College, Kandy will be held at the Sugathadasa
Sports Hotel, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Colombo 14, on Tuesday,
December 2 at 6.30 p.m.
Resident camp for children
The International Day of the Disabled falls on December 3. To
commemorate the event a resident camp for children will be held at
Nittambuwa National Vidyapeetaya from December 1 to 3 with the
participation of about 300 disabled children.
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha will be the chief guest of the
occasion.
Govt dental clinic branches
Health and Nutrition Ministry has taken steps to branch out the
dental clinical services into two sections to provide a better service
to the public.
Accordingly, all clinical activities related to mouth surgery,
emergency unit of out-patients department and admission of in-patients
are to be conducted at the Dental Clinic at Ward Place while
out-patients dental clinic, specialist dental units and community dental
clinical unit are to be operated at the Fourth Floor, Kidney Hospital,
Maligawatte. Health Ministry has also taken steps to recruit 108 dental
surgeons to be posted to Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Badulla
and Nuwara Eliya districts and also at hospitals in the North and East.

by the Central Province Anti-Terrorist Operation Bureau, as a suspect in
the series of bomb explosions that took place in Kandy and Matale in
2006. He is suspected to have operated with another accomplice named
Muthusamy Raj Kumara alias Kanna.
Manoj is now reported to be operating in Colombo along with a group
of twelve other terrorists.

Kanchana Abhayapala lecture
Sarvodaya Legal Services Movement (SLSM) is pleased to announce the
arrival of Dr. Kul Gautam (Former Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF
and Assistant Secretary General of United Nations) at the invitation
SLSM to deliver the 18th Kanchana Abhayapala Memorial Lecture on
November 28, 2008 at BMICH on the theme Impact of war on the lives of
children: A rights perspective.
The Kanchana Abhayapala Memorial Lecture is held annually by the
Sarvodaya Legal Services Movement to commemorate the life and death of a
human rights defender who sacrificed his life in 1989. Dr. Gautam has
dealt with the highest levels of policy making at the United Nations,
including the General Assembly, Security Council, ECOSOC and the UNICEF
Executive Board. And he oversaw UNICEF cooperation in over 150
developing countries.
Dr. Gautam has been a passionate advocate for cause of child rights
and human development. In recognition of his accomplishments, the Himal
magazine in Nepal listed him as one of the 101 eminent international
personalities of Nepal of the past 100 years. Further information can be

EDB Office for Hambantota
An office of the Export Development Board will be opened today by
Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris in Hambantota today.
This will facilitate exporters in the Deep South and SME
entrepreneurs wishing to find export avenues for their products.
Several other ministers, MPs, provincial councillors and senior EDB
