Terrorism should be eradicated - Opposition Leader
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday told Parliament that
steps should be taken to eliminate terrorism from the world not only
through military means but also by providing political, social and
economic solutions to defeat terrorism.
Wickremesinghe making a special statement on the Mumbai terrorist
attack, said, “terrorism should be eradicated from the entire SAARC
region and the world as well. However, it cannot be done only through
military means. Measures should also be taken to address the other
political and socio-economic problems which have led to terrorism. The
Indian Government has realised this situation.”
The Opposition Leader said the UNP vehemently condemns the terrorist
attack launched in Mumbai, the economic hub of India.
Terrorism has become a severe problem to the entire world. It is not
enough only to condemn this kind of terrorist attack. The entire region
should join hands to defeat terrorism.
“We should consider how the Indian Government faced these terrorist
attacks. The Indian Government always tries to uphold the supremacy of
the law in tackling these terrorist activities. The Indian Government
did not harass the journalists who reported this incident. The Indian
Government has not acted to portray this incident on a racial track to
take any advantages.
Therefore, any Government should combat terrorism by safeguarding
democracy and upholding the supremacy of the law, he added. JVP MP
Vijitha Herath said all members of the JVP vehemently condemned this
terrorist attack in India.
He said that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stated this
attack could be the work of some internal groups supported by external
groups. Therefore the Indian Government should take action to find out
these external sources to defeat terrorism, he said. |
