Seetha Devi SC hockey champs

Seetha Devi Sports Club, Kandy continued their success trail when
they became champions in the tournament for women while Christ Church
Sports Club, Matale and Sri Lanka Air Force became joint champions in
the tournament for men at the all-island seven-a-side Old Vijayans
hockey tournament for 2008 organised by the Past Pupils Association of
Vijaya College and worked off at Nandimithra Stadium astro turf at
Matale.
Seetha Devi SC won their second hockey title in a week when they beat
Essence Sports Club Kandy 1-0 in the final. At half time there was no
scoring.
Seetha Devi SC scored their winning goal through National Women’s
Team skipper and centre forward Shyama Kumari Ranasinghe.
Insaka Samaranayake and Anuruddha Herath Bandara umpired.
In the semi-finals Seetha Devi beat Old Devians 3-0 and Essence SC
beat Colts SC 2-1 on a tie breaker.
Men’s championship
Air Force Sports Club and Christ Church SC were declared joint
champions as only three minutes of play was possible due to bad light.
In the semi-finals Air Force beat Sri Lanka Army 3-2 on a tie breaker
strokes and Christ Church Sports Club defeated Park Sports Club Matale
2-1 also on a tie breaker. Both matches ended in one all draws at the
end of full time.
Veterans tournament
Park Sports Club, Matale won the veterans over 40 tournament by
defeating CH and FC 2-1 on a tie breaker in the finals.
This turned out to be a bitterly fought out battle with the scores
remaining deadlocked at one all at the end of full time. Centre forward
Indrawansa Herath scored for Park SC while Suresh Wijeratne scored for
CH and FC during field play.
Ajith Jayasena and Sarath Jayasinghe umpired.
Chief guests at the awards presentation ceremony were Minister of
Urban Development Rohana Dissanayake, Deputy Minister of Petroleum
Resources Duminda Perera and Managing Director of Janashakthi, Prakash
Schaffter. |
