Systematic programme to benefit three wheeler industry
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has laid emphasis on the problems faced
by the three wheeler industry and urged the implementation of a
systematic programme on the three wheeler industry for the benefit of
the public.
President Rajapaksa yesterday held a discussion at Temple Trees to
discuss the problems faced by the three wheeler operators and to obtain
their views for the 2009 Budget, a media release issued by the
President's Media Unit said yesterday.
At present nearly 342,000 three wheelers are engaged in this
industry. Over three million families depend on this industry directly
and indirectly. The three wheeler industry has made 4.3 per cent
contribution to the country's transport sector. Nearly 3,000 to 4,000
three wheelers are registered per month.
The three wheeler operators held extensive discussions with the
President and submitted their proposals on various problems faced by
them.
Following a request made by three wheeler operators, the President
paid special attention regarding the problems arising in parking three
wheelers. The President directed the IGP to make necessary arrangements
for the parking of three wheelers at selected places in Colombo city.
The President also stressed the importance of making a proper
identification and following a proper methodology to register three
wheelers.
Extensive discussions were also held to provide a systematic training
to three wheeler drivers. They could also be used as partners of the
security programme implemented by the Government. The discussions also
centred on minimising the environmental pollution caused by the three
wheelers and introduce gas units as an alternative to reduce the fuel
cost of three wheelers.
Ministers A.H.M.Fowzie, Dullas Alahapperuma, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya,
Lasantha Alagiyawanna and President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga were
also attended the discussion.
