Tharanga steers NCC to victory

Opener Upul Tharanga hammered a superb 147 as NCC defeated their traditional rivals SSC by four wickets in their annual limited over cricket encounter played for the J.R. Jayewardene Memorial Trophy at Maitland Place yesterday.

The dashing left hander collected his runs from just 123 deliveries with four sixes and 18 boundaries as NCC successfully overtook SSC's formidable total of 270 runs with three overs to spare.

SSC: 270 in 49.5 overs (K. Silva 78, H. Fernando 37, S. Karunanayake 32, T. Kottahewa 2 for 45, C. Komasaru 2 for 49, A. Ganegama 2 for 54)

NCC: 271 for 6 in 47.1 overs (U. Tharanga 147, L. Fernando 33, K. Gunawardena 23, C. Wijesinghe 25, K. Lokuarachchi 3 for 45, R. Kern 2 for 35). (C.D)
