Professional training for quality education- ACUET
The All-Ceylon Union of English Teachers' (ACUET), Secretary-General
M.A. Stanley Perera, in a message to mark the World Teachers' Day on
October 5 emphasised the need of Professional Training for quality
education. Never before has this need been greater. While everyone in
the World has the fundamental right to quality education, unfortunately
access to this right is woefully unequal.
The message adds -
On October 5, 1996, the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the
status of teachers was unanimously adopted by nations around the World.
UNESCO estimates that 18 million more teachers are needed worldwide
if universal primary education is to be achieved by 2015. This shortage
of qualified teachers is considered one of the biggest obstacles in
achieving the education for all goals.
The Union calls upon the teachers to resolve on this Teachers' Day to
promote and help develop education programmes aimed at fighting
intolerance and prejudice and provide professional guidance to classroom
teachers. Some solutions are complex and require a combination of
legislation, proactive intervention and the involvement of the interest
groups.
