Army anniversary commemorations begin with Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
observances
The traditional Army Flag Blessing Ceremony precursor to the
forthcoming 59th anniversary of the Army and Army Day (October 10), one
of the most prominent events in the Army calendar, took place on
Saturday morning at the sacred Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, graced
by members of the Maha Sangha and Army Commander Lieutenant General
Sarath Fonseka.
As is the practice every year, flags representing the Army
Headquarters, Volunteer Force Headquarters, Security Forces
Headquarters, Divisions, Brigades, Regiments, Battalions, Army Training
schools and other units were invoked blessings of this sacred temple by
the chief prelate Most Venerable Pallegama Sirinivasabhidhana Nayaka
Thera, Atamasthanadhipathi and members of the Maha Sangha, representing
Ruwanweliseya, Mirisawetiya, Thuparamaya, Isurumuniya and a few other
major places of worship in Anurahdapura.
The flags which were carried in procession were subsequently handed
over to the Commander, to be laid on the upper layer (Udamaluwa) by
Senior Army Officers after being taken thrice round the historic Bo tree
in veneration.
Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, a gathering of his
Senior Officers and soldiers afterwards paid their respect, and invoked
blessings on the Army and its forward-march. The Army Commander offered
Atapirikara, Ven. Pallegama Sirinivasabhidhana Nayaka Thera after a
brief oration blessed the Army Commander. Lt. Gen. Fonseka, representing
all ranks in turn made a financial donation towards the Jaya Sri Maha
Bodhi Trust.
The commander also visited the Victory Army Hospital at Anuradhapura
and distributed gift parcels to personnel. President of the Army Seva
Vanitha Unit Anoma Fonseka was also present on the occasion. |
