Doctors seek police action on doctor's murder

The Government Medical Officers' Association said they have decided
to embark on a countrywide trade union action if the police did not take
prompt action to arrest suspect in the murder of Bandagiriya Central
Dispensary's residential woman doctor W. D. L. Indunil.
The doctors attached to GMOA Hambantota branch entered into a protest
today demanding the immediate arrest of the suspect involved in Dr.
Indunil's murder.
Dr. Indunil was shot dead at her official residence in Bandagiriya,
Hambantota on Monday (29) night. Her parents were also inside the house
at the time the shots were fired by the suspect.
She was a resident of Kalutara district, unmarried and was living
with her parents at the doctor's quarters after her appointment to the
Central Dispensary of Bandagiriya.
Dr. Upul Gunasekera of the GMOA said according to information
available to them, the suspect is said to have threatened to kill the
victim on several occasions.
He is also facing criminal assault charges on the victim, according
to police.
The victim's father had seen the suspect with the murder weapon in
his hand after the shots have been fired.
She has been shot on the left side of her chest, said Dr. Gunasekera.
Dr. Gunasekera said the GMOA expects the police to take the suspect
into custody within the next 48 hours and if they were unable to do so
they will resort to country-wide strike action.
The doctors attached to the Association have unanimously agreed to
the decision of resorting to trade union action regarding the murder of
Dr. Indunil to demand the immediate arrest of the suspect in her murder. |
