Three fined Rs.25,000 each for noise pollution

The Supreme Court yesterday fined three persons Rs.25,000 each after
they were found guilty of violating the Supreme Court order on noise
pollution.
They had operated amplified sound equipment in a night club in
Hikkaduwa.
The Court to remanded the trio on September 1. They had been produced
before the Hikkaduwa Magistrate for operating sound equipment during the
night disturbing the neighbourhood in violation of the Court order that
strictly prohibited the use of sound amplification after 10 in the night
until six in the morning.
The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC with Justice Ms.
Shiranee Thilakawardane and Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga.
The Court also directed Police Legal Director SSP Gamini Dissanayake
and President's Counsel Shibly Aziz to come to an agreement on using
loudspeakers during Ramazan festival day.
The Court in a rights application issued an interim order directing
the IGP to strictly implement the Section 80(1) of the Police Ordinance
to control the noise emanating from loudspeakers until the Community
Noise Level Standards are passed by Parliament. |
