COSLAM Poya Day lecture

The Conference of Sri Lanka Malays (COSLAM) will conduct its monthly Islamic lecture series "In the shade of the qur'an" at the YMMA Conference Auditorium, No. 63, Dematagoda, Colombo 9 on Sunday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 12. noon which will be conducted in Malay and Tamil. The lecture will be given by Al Haj Moulavi M. Muzni Ameer (Dheeni). Separate Seating arrangements have been made for ladies.

Book Launch

The most recent publication of Dr. W. M. Karunadasa Prof. of International Relations, University of Colombo will be launched at the BMICH Committee Room A on September 12 at 5. p.m.. This is the most recent addition of the author which is entitled as "Sri Lankawe Videsha Prathipaththiya - Paryeshanathmaka Adyayanayak" (Sri Lanka's Foreign Policy - A Research Study).


Kotte Y's Charter Anniversary

The 13th Charter anniversary celebrations of the Y's Mens' Club of Kotte will be held on Saturday September 13 at the Roof Top of Park West Apartments, Layards Road, Colombo 5 at 7.00 p.m.


Off to India

Minister of Higher Education Prof. Wiswa Warnapala, on an invitation extended by the World Bank, will be in India from September 14 to 18 to study the status and progress of the World Bank funded projects in New Delhi.

The office of the South Asian Region of the World Bank has already made arrangements for the Minister to have extensive talks with Lead Education Specialist of the World Bank Samuel Carlson based in New Delhi and also with senior specialists of the Project Implementation Team in New Delhi.


Fund raiser for Cancer Hospital

The Kandy High School OGA (Colombo Branch) presents an evening of entertainment on Saturday September 13 at the Waters Edge from 7 p.m. onwards. Proceeds from this event will go towards the National Cancer Hospital at Maharagama for the purchase of Breast cancer Diagnosis Kits.

Two new books on positive

thinking

Two new books authored by veteran writer Menike Sumanasekera will be launched at the BMICH during the Colombo International Book Fair from September 20 to 28.

Ms. Sumanasekera is a well known author on positive thinking and a counsellor in psychology.

The two new books are titled 'Preethimath Yuga Diviyakata Danathmaka Asiri' (Positive Ideas for Happy Family Life) and 'Danathmaka Balayen Vismitha Nirogi Suwayak' (marvellous Healthy Life through Positive Power).
 


UNP PC members take oaths

UNP Provincial Councillors elected to the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils yesterday took oaths before Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Actor Ranjan Ramanayake and Retired Major General Janaka Perera who vied for the chief ministerial slots in the Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provincial Councils were sworn in as the Opposition Leaders of the respective councils.

According to UNP Media Spokesman MP Tissa Attanayake, these Provincial councillors took a special pledge before the UNP Leader yesterday.

A total of 17 UNP councillors were elected to the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council while the North Central Province has 12.


Lahiru among edexcel's top ten

Lahiru Lakmal Walawage was amongst the top then world wide international studients according to Edexcel, the UK's largest awarding body.

The results issued this month show that Lahiru Lakmal Walawage, a student of Colombo International School - Kandy who sat the English Language exam at British Council, Kandy achieved one of the highest overall marks.

Ross Hall, Edexcel's International Director, said. "This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work students put into preparing for their examinations. We send our congratulations to Lahiru Lakmal Walawage."


National programme to uplift rural products

The Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training together with Ministry of Science and Technology has launched the national programme to ensure the high quality and standard of goods and services produced in the rural sector.

The annual intake of 25,000 trainees to the national apprenticeship and Industrial Training Authority will be increased to 50,000 under the new setup.

The joint programme envisages to impart the modern scientific knowledge and Information Technology to the unemployed rural youth.


Fined Rs. 5,000

Dambulla Magistrate Nimal Ranaweera imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on H. M. Wijesekera who pleaded guilty to having 2,200 mgs of ganja in his possession.
