Minister Mervyn Silva granted bail

Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva, wanted in connection with an incident in
Kelaniya recently, surrendered before the Colombo Additional Magistrate
Manjula Tillekeratne last morning through his lawyers.
After lengthy submissions by President’s Counsel Daya Perera, Senior
Counsel for the Prosecution and Jayantha Weerasinghe, Senior Counsel for
Dr. Mervyn Silva, the Magistrate granted bail for Dr. Silva in Rs.
50,000 and a bond of Rs. 500,000 with a surety.
Granting bail for Minister Mervyn Silva, the Magistrate observed that
if the Minister violates any of the conditions ordered by the Court,
that the bail bond will be cancelled and he will be remanded.
The Court is considering granting bail for the Minister mainly
because that he surrendered to court, the Magistrate observed.
The Magistrate also ordered the Minister not to interfere with any of
the prosecution witnesses.
President’s Counsel Daya Perera with Sampath Mendis, Jeewantha
Jayatilleke and G.G. Arulpragasam instructed by Sudath Perera Associates
appeared for the Sirasa.
President’s Counsel Daya Perera with Udaya Rohan de Silva, Manoj
Bandara and Deshan Hewavithana instructed by Sudath Perera Associates
appeared for the Sirasa News Director.
Jayantha Weerasinghe with Anton Senanayake, Sanjey Gamage and Chandra
Senanayake appeared for the Minister.
The case will be called again on August 29. |
