Sri Lanka beat RSA 'A' 4-0 in round 4
Sri Lanka fought back after two successive losses (to Azerbaijan and
Turkey 'B') sweeping South Africa 'A' 4-0 on Tuesday in the fourth round
of the World
Youth Chess Olympiad currently underway in Mersin, Turkey.
On Monday evening, Sri Lanka did creditably to take 1.5 points off
the strong Turkey 'B' team, after having lost 2 games and drawn 2
against Azerbaijan, one of the top teams in the tournament.
In the match against Turkey 'B', Akhila Kavinda lost to Berkan Atman,
Oshadhee Kottahachchy beat Kaan Kanli, Kaveesha Amarasena drew with
Gokhan Gaygusuzoglu and Ushan Samarakoon lost to Demre Kerigan.
Against South Africa, Akhila Kavinda beat Craig Bornheim,
Kottahachchy beat Jaishil Modi, Amarasena beat Saven Naidu and
Samarakoon beat Gabriel Hendriksz.
Meanwhile India, fielding 3 International Masters and one FIDE Master
were shocked by lower ranked Armenia 3-1, with only S.P. Sethuraman
scoring a win.
India had earlier beaten the strong Russian team 3.5-0.5. In other
key matches, Philippines beat Turkey 'A' 3.5-0.5; Azerbaijan beat
England 3.0-1.0; and Slovakia beat Switzerland 'A' 3.0-1.0.
Russia was leading Georgia 2.0-1.0 with one game still incomplete.
Thus, at the end of the 4th round, Armenia leads the field with 13.5,
followed by the Philippines (12.5) and India (10.5). Sri Lanka has 9.5
points.
The tournament is being played over 9 rounds. India is the defending
Champion of the World Youth Olympiad.
