No chance for a UNP victory - Minister Hemakumara

Agriculture Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara yesterday said there is no chance for a UNP victory in the coming Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provincial Council Elections.

The UPFA will win both provincial councils and will come to power with a considerable majority, Nanayakkara said.

He said that the UNPers are now engaged in false propaganda campaign to cover up their defeat and have started to fabricate various allegations. They would say that these were the prime course for their defeat in the election.

Addressing the media at Mahaweli Centre Minister Nanayakkara said that the party’s internal crisis is also the prime reason for the setback of the UNP.

Minister Nanayakkara said that whatever propaganda campaign was carried out the UNP’s defeat in the coming election an unavoidable one. “There is no competent leader to maintain the party.”

The departure of prominent party members of the area too will have an impact on the defeat of the UNP in the election. “Several members of UNP who were disappointed with the chief ministerial candidate keep quiet and refrain from taking part in the election propaganda campaign.”

He said the team led by the UNP Chief Ministerial candidate is engaged in various polls violations.

He said Janaka Perera was a patriotic military personalty. He performed well to protect the motherland from the LTTE terrorists. “But now he is with those who signed MoUs with the LTTE to betray the country.”

Any victory of the UNP means the LTTE would strengthen itself again and will paralyse the military operations being carried out against the LTTE, he added.

“The UNP was not a bad party. It was formulated by the most reputed and educated personalties. But due to the unproductive leaders the dignity of the party has been diminished. All must come forward to ensure the victory of the UPFA.”
