Tissanayagam case fixed for Aug 25

Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara yesterday fixed the case
against J.S. Tissanayagam filed under Prevention of Terrorism Act and
Emergency Law, for August 25.
The Attorney-General’s Department filed indictment against
Jeyaprakasan Sittappalam Tissanayagam with three counts for conspiring
to publish North Eastern Monthly magazine between June 1, 2006 to June
1, 2007 and publishing the magazine as a result of the conspiracy.
The publication was defamatory of the Government and arousing racism.
According to the indictment he had obtained funds from Non Governmental
Organisations for publishing the magazine.
Armed gang snatched gold chain
Bandula Gunasekera in Matara
Two member armed gang on a motorcycle forcibly stopped a businessman
on another motorcycle and snatch his gold chain valued Rs. 25,000.
The victim was on his way back home at night.

The cultural section of the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Iran from
July 2 has been screening Iranian films weekly at their auditorium at
No. 6, Sir Ernest de Silva Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Culture of Islam programme on SLBC
‘Thoughts for the day’ programmes, quotes from the Quran / Hadees are
broadcast on Friday mornings at 6 a.m. on the SLBC on frequency 95.6 MHz
- English Service. The Presenter is Ms. Naadira Ramiz / Ms. Suzannah
(Suzie) Jamaldeen of Al Muslimaat, An Association of Muslim Women and
Girls, Dehiwela.
On ‘Culture of Islam’ programme, interesting topics from an Islamic
perspective are broadcast over the airwaves of the English Service of
the SLBC at 9 p.m.
Krishnamurti talk
A recorded public talk on ‘You are violence’ delivered by J.
Krishnamurti will be replayed at Anula Nursery School hall, 310, High
Level Road, Colombo 6 at 9.45 a.m. on Sunday, August 24.
The event is organised by the Krishnamurti Centre, Sri Lanka Inc.
Seminar on recent taxation changes
A seminar on taxation to elucidate and discuss some of the issues and
problems relating to current taxation changes organised by the
Association of Past Inland Revenue Officers (APIRO) will be held on
September 9 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, No. 100, Independence
Square, Colombo 7 at 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
The chief guest would be Commissioner General of Inland Revenue S.
Angammana and the issues will be discussed and explained by Senior
Officers of the Inland Revenue Department and eminent lawyers.
Northern hospitals to be developed
President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed the Health Ministry Secretary
Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage to attend the outstanding needs of the
Northern Province hospitals such as drugs and medical equipment. The
President said so at a conference at the Presidential Secretariat
yesterday to inquire into the problems faced by the Forces in the
Northern Province.
Medicine and medical equipment should be imported without any delay
as an essential requirement, the President stated. A separate section be
opened in every hospital in the Northern Province for treatment of Armed
Forces’ casualties. Further a report from the Security Forces on the
medical needs of those hospitals be obtained and all outstanding
shortcomings be rectified, the President pointed out.
The President also stressed on the need to make the Vanuniya Army
Hospital a fully pledged one.
Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa, President’s Secretary Lalith
Weeratunga, Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage,
Northern Province Governor Victor Perera, Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath
Fonseka and a deputation from the defence establishment participated.
Funds for Pitisera Devale Peraheras

The Central Province Pitisera Devala Trust under the patronage of CP
Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa will donate Rs. 780,000 to conduct the
perahera festival of thirteen such devales. President Mahinda Rajapaksa
presented the donations to the Basnayake Nilames in charge of these
devales in kandy recently.
Maheswaran murder case fixed for Nov 28

Colombo High Court Judge Thilak Thabrew yesterday fixed the
Parliamentarian T. Maheswaran murder case for November 28.
The Court served indictment to T.K. Valentino alias Wasantha for
committing the murder of T. Maheswaran at Shivam Kovil at Kotahena on
January 1, 2008. The indictment includes 28 witnesses and nine
productions.
