Air strike on LTTE gathering point

Air Force MI 24 helicopters carried out air strikes on a LTTE gathering point 4.5 Km north of Vaunikulam yesterday around 3.45 pm, a spokesman from the Media Centre for National Security said.

Priority for teacher appointments

Chief Minister Southern Province also the Minister of Education Shan Wijayalal de Silva said that since 2004 December up to 2008 May around 3929 teaching appointments have been made.

The programme was launched to fill teacher vacancies in 5 zonal areas of the Southern Province, Morawaka, Udugama, Walasmulla, Elpitiya and Hanbantota where teacher shortages were experienced.

The Chief Minister also said that he would give priority to filling teacher vacancies in the other six educational zones shortly.

Under this programme he said he would take action to recruit 2970 graduate teachers, 802 Diploma holders in Home Economics, 66 Tamil teachers and 17 graduates in education.

Weed grows in canal

A weed has grown in places on the water of the canal carrying water from the Kalaweva Mahaweli reservoir to the rural reservoir of Mulannatuva. The weed - Japan jabora - can be seen on the water in the Mulannatuva reservoir too. The two pieces of infrastructure are in the Mahaweli H Zone.

Man 37, slain in bed

A 37 year old man was killed on the bed in a house at Attumparayaya area, Dambulla police said. The dead man was identified as Ganagala Athukoralalage Gunatilaka a resident in the same area. Dambulla Magistrate Nimal Ranaweera visited the scene and ordered the police to submit a report of the Postmortem and to arrest the suspects.

Rural reservoir renovation

A tank renovation project will be implemented in the Kelegama grama niladhari division of the Galgamuwa divisional secretariat area of the Galgamuwa electorate.

Through this project, the North Western Provincial Council is to repair the Hapukumburugama rural reservoir.

The Hapukumburugama reservoir is used by about 146 families in its neighbourhood. Agricultural work in about 40 acres of paddy-fields are done depending on it, especially during the cultivation period of Yala.
