Orchids on display

The annual show of the Orchid Circle of Ceylon, its 72nd, will be held at the Viharamaha Devi Park on August 15, 16 and 17.

There will be trade stalls offering orchids ornamental plants for sale and fish and bird stalls.

Visitors to the show can also obtain membership of the Orchid Circle Visitors can also purchase a book printed by the Orchid Circle of ceylon on values and growing of orchids. Lectures will be held on all three days.


Literary evening

A literary evening with Neelika Jayawardane, Assistant Professor of English, Department of English & Creative Writing, State University of New York, Oswego, on Images of South Africa: Apartheid and After - Transformation and Transition in Contemporary Art, Film, and Literature will be held on August 14 at 5.30 p.m. at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Colombo 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8.


New Head at Insurance Board

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed Udayasri Kariyawasam as the Chairman of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka.

Kariyawasam assumed duties on August 6.

He served as a Board Member of the Insurance Board in 2004 and 2005 was also the Chairman of the Bank of Ceylon and the Ceylon Electricity Board.


Medical clinic

The Jaffna Hindu Ladies College Old Girls’ Association (Colombo Branch) will hold a free medical clinic and Legal consultation programme with the assistance of the Lions Club 306 B1, 306 B2 (Lions Club of Grandpass) on Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at Bambalapitiya Saraswathy Hall, Colombo 4.

The chief guests will be Lion S. Raghavan, immediate past Governor - 306B1, Lions Club International and Lion Lady Ranjini Raghavan while Lion Rajeswary Ravikularajah, District Chairperson 306 B1, Lion N. Mahendran, District Chairperson 306 B2 and Mr. Sivananthan, Attorney-at-Law and Mrs. Sivananthan will be the special guests.

Suganthy Rajakulendran, Attorney-at-Law will do the legal consultation and Dr. Vignaveny Selvanathan, Consultant physician, National Institute for Traditional Medicine, Ministry of Indigenous Medicine will also participate.


Festival of Choirs

Festival of Choirs 2008, organised by the Ceylon Bible Society will be held on August 9 at 5.00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07.

Mahen Peiris, and his wife will be the chief guests. Twelve choirs from schools and churches will participate.
