FM to attend 15th NAM Ministerial Conference in Tehran
Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama will lead the Sri Lankan
delegation to the 15th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Conference
to be held in the Iranian capital Tehran from July 29 to July 30, states
a Foreign Ministry press release.
Sri Lanka is a founder member of NAM, which comprises 118 member
states, representing nearly two-thirds of the UN membership and 55% of
the world population.
The NAM has always had a deep and abiding commitment to world peace
and security, which pre-dates its formal institutionalization in 1961 at
the first Summit held in Belgrade. Sri Lanka hosted the 5th Non-Aligned
Summit in 1976 and is currently a Vice Chair for the Asian region.
Minister Bogollagama will address the plenary session on the
inaugural day of the meeting on 29th July and will return to Colombo on
the same day, due to his prior commitments in connection with the 15th
SAARC Summit in Colombo. He is also scheduled to call on the President
of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Mahmoud Ahamadinejad before his
departure for Colombo.
