A professional’s response

“There is a tendency in today’s society for people to be self centered, with an erosion of human values. The BCIS-YCL awards initiated by the BCIS would motivate youth and young leaders to view society more humanely.

Participation of youth in influencing society is the need of the hour,” said N. K. Pilapitiya, principal of a leading school in Colombo, Museaus College, when she was asked as to what is the first impression that comes to her mind when she hears about the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies - Young Community Leader Awards.

What is it that gives you joy when you help someone?

One derives immense joy when you help someone for the sake of helping. One should not expect anything in return. It’s then where there will be great joy.

To what extent could this awards scheme be useful to the Sri Lankan youth?

This awards scheme would encourage and also awaken youth to their potentiality.

How would you define a real Community Leader?

A real Community Leader should not expect any material gains, or benefits. He should have the correct values, and work on principles and should have the organising capacity and a good rapport with people.

What kind of qualities should a real Community Leader possess according to your point of view?

A good amiable personality, good speaking skills, open mindedness, patience and tolerance, capacity to organise and implement.

What kind of impact will the BCIS-YCL awards create in today’s society by felicitating young Sri Lankan men and women?

It will be a source of encouragement and boost to the younger generations to venture into community development projects.

Do you see a great difference among young people when it comes to serving your community, comparing to your young days and today’s current situation?

Yes, in our days, Sri Lankan society was more conservative and would not allow particular young girls and women to move around involving in community services projects. Today people’s attitudes are changing and they are more broad-minded, thereby allowing the younger people to involve with confidence, among people of all categories.

What is the message that you would give to youth regarding the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS-YCL) Awards?

In a society where there is an erosion of values and no respect for law and order, youth could take initiatives and lead by precept and example. The BCIS-YCL Awards would be a goal to which they can aspire.
