Role of a woman in a man's world
In the latest edition of LMD, out now, the business journal speaks to
the Deputy General Manager of Ceylinco Homes International, Denise
Abeyeratne, about her views on Sri Lankan working women. She tells the
widely read biz magazine, "Sri Lankan women have made their mark - that
some of them hold key diplomatic positions is testimony to this."
In relation to her line of work - the development and construction
sector, which is seen as something of a man's profession - Abeyeratne
explains the importance of meeting this challenge. She adds: "Most
people fail not because of a lack of ability or intelligence, but due to
a lack of desire, discipline, dedication and direction."
The property-development professional observes that although "the
conflict that has raged for several decades, resulting in economic ups
and downs, prices in the real-estate market have appreciated steadily
over the years".
She remains positive that "Sri Lanka will be South-East Asia's next
hot spot and, as a result, infrastructure development will be key".
In the meantime, as regards work, Abeyeratne affirms, "once you
discover your talent and identify your dream, you need to pursue it and
stop waiting for opportunities!"
However, she expresses dismay over the ongoing brain drain, where
"once qualified abroad, many tend to seek employment overseas or even
migrate elsewhere".
She elaborates, "It is good for professionals and other qualified
workers to have this type of exposure, but they must not forget to give
back to their country some of what they received from it."
The exclusive interview is featured in the July issue of LMD, the
flagship publication of Media Services.
The same media house also publishes LIVING, MOST RESPECTED and THE
LMD 50, and presents BENCHMARK (the weekly business programme). |
