Wife 'axed' to death by husband

A woman aged 39 was hacked with an axe and killed on the spot by her husband in Pahala Eraula area in the Dambulla Police Division.

Police investigations have revealed that the cause of the murder was a family dispute.

The suspect surrendered to Dambulla Police station.


Members’ day

Zahira College Colombo Group of 80 will hold its members’ day on July 17 from 9.30 a.m. at the Zahira College Grounds. The cricket and soccer tournaments will also be held among the members of the Group of 80 and 90. The Group of 80 request all the members with their families to participate.


Perera too participates at IMO

Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo and CEO/Sri Lanka Olympiad Mathematics Foundation have selected six contestants to represent Sri Lanka at the 49th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) which has commenced in Madrid, Spain on July 10 and will continue till July 22.

Jayasundara Liyanage Pasindu Namal Perera of Nalanda College Colombo 10, whose name has been ommited from the list of contestants which appeared on July 14 Daily News due to an oversight also joined the team to participate the above event.


Insurance Ombudsman on Radio

Insurance Ombudsman of Sri Lanka Dr. Wickrema Weerasooria has been commissioned by the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL) which is the governing body of the Insurance Industry, to deliver several Radio talks over Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) on “Insurance and You”.

Initially, Dr. Weerasooria will deliver these Radio Talks in English and thereafter the talks will be repeated in Sinhalese and Tamil.

The Five (5) Radio Talks on”Insurance and You” by the Insurance Ombudsman will be broadcast each Monday commencing from July 21 at 6.30 p.m. after the News on the SLBC English channel.
 


Body found

The Bingiriya police recovered an unidentified body from Heenapanawa area with a wire pulled down from the high tension power line.

The body of an elderly man of Devegiriya was recovered by the Galgamuwa Police on Saturday. The victim was identified as S. Sandarahamy (63).


Two PCs dead in accident

Two Police Constables died when their motorcycle collided with a police truck in Parayankulam, Vavuniya on Monday night.

Police Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said PC Dasanayake and Karunaratne who were riding a motorcycle on Mannar road collided with a police truck at the 40th Mile post in Parayankulam at around 7.45 pm.

The two PC's were killed on the spot and the driver of the police truck was taken into custody.


21 injured in accident

Twenty one Kataragama-bound pilgrims were reportedly injured when the lorry they they were being driven in skidded off the road and rolled over at Buttala.

The injured were admitted to Hambantota Base Hospital and Kataragama District Hospital, the said.

The accident had taken place at 11 a.m.
