Neelan Thiruchelvam Memorial Lecture

The Neelan Thiruchelvam Memorial Lecture will be held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium, 100, Independence Square, Colombo 7 on July 27, at 6.00 p.m.

Guest Speaker Professor Gowher Rizvi, Lecture in Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Governance and Director, Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Harvard University will speak on democracy, governance and development.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust and the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Colombo.


Dayananda Gunawardana Memorial Hall

A ceremony will be held to open a new hall and name it as the Dayananda Gunawardana Hall under the patronage of President of the Institute of Sinhala Culture Lakshman Jayakody at the Sudharshi Complex, 375, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 on July 12 at 9.30 a.m.

Drama film and literary personalities and culture enthusiasts are invited to this ceremony, Dr. Leel Gunasekera, Secretary of the Institute of Sinhala Culture said.


Annual get-together

The annual get-together of the Old Anandian's Centenary Group will be held at the Holiday Inn, Colombo on July 12 at 8.30 p.m.

Old Anandian's Centenary Group Chairman Ravindra Athukorala requested all old boys of the 1986-1988 group to participate.


Vocational training centre opening

The Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Vocational Training Centre built at Kaludiyawalawatta, Kadirana South in Katana will be opened by Vocational and Technical Training Minister Piyasena Gamage on July 16 at 9 a.m.


Buddhist books launch

Two Buddhist books The Buddha and His Teaching in Brief authored by the National Sangha Council Secretary Ven. Dutuwewe Lankananda Thera and Aprakata Bauddha Lokaya authored by Council's International Affairs Secretary Ven. Missaka Kamalasiri Thera will be launched at a ceremony at the Dharma Vijaya Foundation, Colombo 7 on July 12 at 3 p.m.


Public lecture

A public lecture on "Helping disaster survivors: What should be and should not be done" by Dr. Athula Sumathipala will be held on July 16 at 5 p.m. organised by Dharmavijaya Foundation, 380/7, Sarana Road, Off Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

It is organised by the Red Lotus Buddhist Humanitarian Association in collaboration with the Institute for Research and Development.


Change of venue

The venue for the monthly service of 'Praise and Worship' conducted every second Sunday at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour will be changed for this month.

It will be held on July 13 at 10.30 a.m. at St. Luke's Church, Maradana Road (opposite Aquinas) Borella.


Lanka at celebrations

Sri Lanka Red Cross Society President Jagath Abeysinghe and Tissa Abeywickrama, Chairman of the RC/RC Movement Task Force attended a function at Buckingham Palace, London on July 9, invited by The Prince of Wales in celebrating the centenary of the British Red Cross since receiving its Royal charter.


AGM, get-together and Henry's day

The Annual General Meeting, get-together and Henry's Day of Henricians Colombo, the Colombo branch of the old students of St. Henry's College, Ilavalai, will be held at St. Philip Neri's Hall, Colombo 11 at St. Philip Neri's Church with a Holy Eucharistic Mass on July 13 at 10 a.m.


Cultural promotion, food fiesta

A cultural promotion and food fiesta organised by the Foreign Language Training Division of the BCIS, showcasing authentic cuisine and cultural displays from Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Mediterranean cultures will be held on July 12 from 12.30 p.m. at the BCIS auditorium, BMICH, Colombo 7. This event is open to the public.

 


Clarification

In our report on page four titled 'SC allows church to intervene in tariff revision case' yesterday, we have inadvertently referred Justice Dr. (Mrs.) Shirani Bandaranayake as Justice Dr. (Mrs.) Shiranee Thilakawardane.

The error is regretted.
