AG files two cases for accepting ransom

The Attorney General filed two cases before the Colombo High Court
against Poobalapillei Kandarasan for obtaining Rs 10 million from two
Tamils in Colombo as ransom.
According to the charges Poobalapillei Kandarasen alias Rajan of 222,
Sinna Urani, Batticaloa had demanded and accepted ransom from Sathasivam
Kumararatnam and Ariyadas Pushpadas.
Kandarasan had abducted Kumararatnam of Jampettah Street, Colombo 13
on September 29, 2006 with some others unknown to the prosecution and
had demanded a ransom from Maheswari Kumararatnam (wife of Sathasivam)
and accepted Rs six million.
According to another case, which includes four counts, Kandarasan had
conspired with some others unknown to the prosecution to abduct Ariyadas
Pushpadas on July 7, 2006 and abducted him. Later he had demanded a
ransom of Rs four million from his mother Aridas Mariyarajina and
accepted it.
According to the statements made by the victims to the Criminal
Investigation Department, Kandarasen had demanded a Rs 10 million ransom
from each person.
