Established in 1986, Gateway also carries out specialised programmes
in association with strategic partners in the UK. Some of these
educational programmes are currently being used in countries such as
Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China.
Jayaweera said that the management would be also investing nearly Rs.
50 million for expansion of the college in Rajagiriya.
“This would include additional class rooms and a comprehensive sports
complex,” he said. He said that construction of the sports complex would
commence next month and would be completed by the end of the year.
He said that since the community does not have good recreation
facilities they would introduce a club concept where adults could use
the sports complex after school hours.
Every year teachers of Gateway are sent to the United Kingdom on
teacher exchange programmes. They are provided with the opportunity to
visit schools of excellence in the UK observing the British Curriculum
in practice in the host country.
They return with a wealth of experience and exposure and are able to
make improvements to the Teaching Learning Programmes. Gateway maintains
teacher exchange programs with Tonbridge Girls Grammar School, Sutton
High School and Aberdour School.
Gateway is currently working on an ambitious programme to further
integrate ICT into teaching and learning. Founder R.I.T. Alles has been
bestowed with the title “Sri Lanka Sikhamani” in the National Honours
list.
He was also awarded a scholarship by the International Development
Resource Center in Ottawa to study school systems in Singapore, Bangkok,
India, Germany, UK, the States and Japan. Gateway has one of the largest
branch networks with 33 centres spread across the country.
