Army amnesty extended

COLOMBO: The Army has extended the general amnesty granted to those soldiers who are Absent Without Official Leave, to rejoin the service.

The deadline for deserters to rejoin the service without any punishment is now May 31, instead of May 16.

Military Spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said 3,638 soldiers had already rejoined the Army after the declaration of the amnesty and the Army extended the deadline considering appeals by others who want to rejoin.

All those who wish to take up this offer should report to their regimental headquarters.

Those who left the army while still receiving training may visit their respective training centres.

In addition, those aged 18-24 who wish to join the Army as new recruits can apply at any Army camp.
