Suntel to sponsor schools junior rugby

The schools under 16 fifteen-a-side league rugby tournament and under 14 ten-a-side league rugby tournament will be sponsored by Suntel Limited for the first time.

The President of the Western Province Schools Rugby Football Association and Principal of Science College Tudor Madapatha addressing a press briefing at the CH and FC Board Room said that the two tournaments will be worked off from May 7 to June 29 at the CH and FC grounds, Maitland Crescent.

The under 16 tournaments will be worked off in two segments with Segment one comprising 16 teams and Segment Two consisting of 12 teams. The under 14 tournament too will be worked off in two divisions with 16 teams vying for honours in Segment One and 12 teams battling it out in Segment Two.

He said that the final round of the two tournaments will be worked off from June 2 to 29 in the Cup, Plate, Bowl, Shield and Saucer categories and for the first time a mercantile firm Suntel Limited has come forward to sponsor this junior rugby tournament. It will be followed by a two-day tournament for under 18 teams.

The Director of Sales and Marketing of Suntel Limited Hasitha Abeywardena said that his firm was keen to promote junior rugby in a big way and has come forward to sponsor the schools under 16 and 14 tournaments.

They hoped to take junior rugby to a higher level and the media publicity would encourage junior rugby players to give of their best. In conclusion he paid a glowing tribute to the 'big man' of Isipatana rugby Hassan Sinhawansa who was instrumental in obtaining this sponsorship.

The 16 teams taking part in Segment One of the under 16 tournament have been divided into four groups. Group A will consist of Isipathana, Mahanama, Prince of Wales and Piliyandala MMV while Group B will consist of Royal, Thurstan, Zahira and Nalanda.

While St. Peter's, Ananda, Wesley and D.S. Senanayake will battle it out in Group 'C' with Group 'D' comprising St. Joseph's, S. Thomas, Science and St. Benedict's. The 12 teams in under 16 Segment Two have been divided into four groups. C.W.W. Kannangara MV, St. Sebastian's and S. de S. Jayasinghe have been drawn into Group 'A' while Group 'B' will consist of St. John's, Seethawaka MMV and Hindu College. Lalith Athulathmudali MV, Asoka MV and Lanka Sabha KV will battle it out in Group 'C' with Dudley Senanayake MV, Dharmapala MV and Moratu MV fighting it out in Group 'D'.

St. Peter's, Thurstan, Science and St. Benedict's are in Group 'A' while Group 'B' will comprise Royal, Ananda, Carey and D.S. Senanayake MV. Group 'C' will consist of Wesley, Mahanama, Prince of Wales and Piliyandala MMV while Isipatana, St. Joseph's, Zahira and Nalanda will battle it out in Group 'D'.

The twelve teams taking part in the under 14 Segment Two have been divided into four groups. C.W.W. Kannangara MV, Seethawaka MV and Lanka Sabha KV are in Group 'A' while St. John's, St. Sebastian's and Dharmapala MV are in Group 'B' with Lalith Athulathmudali MV, Dharmaloka MV and Hindu College being drawn into Group 'C', Dudley Senanayake MV, Asoka MV and Moratu MV will battle it out in Group 'D'.
