Shashikala, Eshani shine in Lankan victory

Sri Lanka women cricketers recorded a convincing 45 run victory over Pakistan in their fourth appearance of the Women's Asia Cup Cricket Tournament match which was worked off at the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala yesterday.

This was their second win over Pakistan in this championship. The visiting skipper Uoorj Mumtaz bowled a brilliant spell to take four wickets for 31 runs to lead the Pakistani bowling attack to restrict Sri Lanka to a modest total of 194.

Sri Lanka did not make a big impact in front of the Pakistani bowlers after they were put into bat. Only Lankan skipper Shashikala Siriwardena and Eshani Kaushalya were able to go big scores.

Shashikala scored 34 before she was caught by the Pakistani Keeper and Eshani collected 44 before being run out in the 42nd over.

The Sri Lankan batting was not persuasive as it was in the previous meeting with Pakistani women. Sri Lanka scored 225 for five at Dambulla in their first meeting in this tournament.

Four players got out before they get to the two digit mark. Chamani Seneviratne scored 18 while Deepika Rasangika was not out on 16. Sajjida Shah captured two wickets for 29 for the Pakistani team while Asmavia Iqbal and Almas Akram took a wicket each.

When the Pakistanis came into bat, they faced early disaster as both their openers departed quickly for cheap scores. Bismah Maroof was the first to go. Chamani Seneviratne had her LBW in the first over of the innings when the total stood at 3. Maroof departed for just one run.

Tasqueen Qadeer too fallowed her to the dressing room after a short while. She scored seven runs as she too was LBW and this time the bowler being Chamari Polgampola.

After that, Sajjida Shah and Uoorj Mumtaz teamed up to build a compelling partnership of 74 runs to lift their team to a secured stage. Shah made 27 before she was run out off an excellent piece of field work done by the Lankan skipper Shashikala.

The Pakistani captain Mumtaz continued with her good work as she recorded her first half century in the tournament. But soon after she was caught brilliantly at mid wicket by Rasangika at 57 with the total reading 109/4.

From there onwards, the visitors did not look confident on what they were on for. The rest of the batting collapsed with wickets falling at regular intervals. They could add only 50 runs to their score.

Chamari Polgampola took four wickets for 26 runs for the Lanka team while while Eshani Kaushalya captured 3 for 25 to lead the Lankan bowling attack.

Final at Welagedera as planned

Despite the rumours that the final of the ongoing tournament is going to be played at the SSC or Rangiri Dambulla International stdium, the SLC officials confirmed that it will take place at the Welagedera Stadium as scheduled.

Earlier on, the Indian team management requested the SLC to shift the venue of the final due to the ground facilities. But it was clear that there were far more attraction of spectators at the Welagedera Stadium than the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. A considerable amount of spectators were seen at Kurunegala throughout the tournament.
