Wheelchair tennis champion for Korea and Italy
Sri Lanka's outstanding performer in wheelchair tennis with an ITF
Ranking of 220 leaves for Korea to complete in the Korean Open from 21st
to 24th May in Busan, Korea.
He will also play Daejo open in Korea. He will then leave for Italy
to participate in the Alabrella Open and thereafter take part in the
Invacare World Cup in Cremona, Italy.
We are hopeful that his achievement in these tournaments would
enhance his present ranking. This Paulson of the USA has donated sum of
US $ 5000 towards expenses involved for these tours. Jagath Welikala
wheelchair tennis coach SLTA and Ranil Harshana, conditioning coach will
accompany Rajakaruna on the tour.
Wheelchair tennis was introduced in 1976 and Sri Lanka began
wheelchair tennis in 2003 with a view to enhance the quality of life of
those who has scarified so much to ensure the territorial integrity of
this country. At present SLTA maintains a national pool that consists
300 players. Out this number 30 players have been identified for
specialized training.
SLTA was established in 1919 and is about the oldest club in Asia.
The SLTA has reputed itself as a welcome location for Local and
International tournaments. From 20th to 23rd June Sri Lanka will host
the first ever wheelchair tennis ranking tournament in Sri Lanka. |
