Ranil trying to divide Muslims - Governor Mowlana

Alavi Mowlana

COLOMBO: Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana yesterday strongly condemned the recent statement purportedly made by the Opposition Leader about Shia and Sunni Muslim diversity specially on the recent visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Governor Mowlana said that Ranil Wickremesinghe was trying to divide the Muslim community by making such statements and it would tarnish the image of Sri Lanka before the Muslim community.

He said the majority of the Muslims living have faith in President Mahinda Rajapaksa and only minor political elements who cannot tolerate the present development drive flocked around Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) to block development.

"Ranil has no right to comment on the Muslims of Sri Lanka specially highlighting the genetic differences of the Muslim community," Mowlana stressed. The Iranian President is a very good friend of President Rajapaksa and the mutual relationship of the both countries would help every citizen of the country, he said.
