Socialist Alliance backs UPFA

With only 11 days remaining for the Eastern Provincial Council Elections, the Socialist Alliance (SA) said yesterday that they would back the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to create a progressive form of Governance in the East.

The SA called the Government's move to hold PC polls in the East as a step forward in strengthening the democratic process both in the East and the North. In a news release signed by the SA Secretary Raja Kollure while appealing to the polity of the East to back their move, said the aim was to defeat reactionary forces lead by the United National Party (UNP).

The release said their stance regarding the ethnic question was that their should be a solution based on devolution of power which exceeded the ones envisaged in the 13th Amendment.

While trying to garner support for the move in the legislature, the Government should also look at the possibility of enacting the 13th Amendment to the full in the North and East as an initial move.
