Giant strides for power sector progress

Taking a giant stride forward in economic development of Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Iranian counterpart Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad symbolically launched the long-awaited and multi-purpose Uma Oya Hydropower project in Wellawaya and the Oil Refinery Capacity Expansion project at Sapugaskanda, at a colourful ceremony in Sapugaskanda yesterday.

Eastern Provincial Council Polls:

Postal voting ends successfully

Around 40 per cent of the total eligible postal voters had cast their votes for the Eastern Provincial Council elections by noon yesterday, authorities said. The postal voting closed by 4.30 p.m yesterday but authorities said public officers unable to cast their vote by yesterday would be allowed time until May 10.

UK arrests three Tiger suspects

Three men were arrested in London and Wales yesterday as part of a long-term police investigation into the LTTE, Scotland Yard said. The trio were arrested following dawn raids on homes and business addresses in Newtown in Wales, in Mitcham, southwest London as well as raids elsewhere in Surrey.

SriLankan pilots to get tax incentive

The Government has reduced the income tax rates on employment income of SriLankan pilots with immediate effect. Pilots will not be subject to pay a maximum of 20 per cent in the future for their employment income.
