Circular Road to spur economic development

TRINCOMALEE: A proposed 57 kilometre Circular Road linking Sampur and Nilaweli is expected to propagate economic development in the area in addition to easing traffic in the Trincomalee city.

Section 1 and 2 of the road with a distance of 9.8 km would be opened for in public from today.

The proposed 57 kilometre Circular Road will ease traffic congestion in Trincomalee.

According to sources, the construction of the Circular Road which links the proposed Export Promotion Zone in Trincomalee has been in operation since November 2006, with the project being mooted by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The Circular Road has been designed by the Defence, Public Security, Law and Order Ministry under the consultancy services of the Road Development Authority and is being implemented by the Engineering Brigade of the Army.

The project which comes under the Negenehira Navodaya is being financed by the Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development Ministry on the instruction of Senior Advisor to the President and Member of Parliament Basil Rajapaksa.

The proposed circular road is also expected to beef up transportation in the area by linking the following major roads starting from Trincomalee, Trincomalee-Horowpathana (A-12 road), Trincomalee-Habarana-Ambepussa (A-06), Trincomalee-Batticaloa (A-15) and Trincomalee-Pulmudde (B-road).

According to sources, there would be seven sections according to the master plan and already Rs. 170 million has been spent on the initial stage with section 1 and 2 (distance 9.8 K.M) been opened for public from today.

The Circular Road which would soon be open for public use is expected to accelerate the Governments' development drive after being liberated from the Tigers clutches.
