Circular Road to spur economic development

TRINCOMALEE: A proposed 57 kilometre Circular Road linking
Sampur and Nilaweli is expected to propagate economic development in the
area in addition to easing traffic in the Trincomalee city.
Section 1 and 2 of the road with a distance of 9.8 km would be opened
for in public from today.

According to sources, the construction of the Circular Road which
links the proposed Export Promotion Zone in Trincomalee has been in
operation since November 2006, with the project being mooted by Defence
Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The Circular Road has been designed by the Defence, Public Security,
Law and Order Ministry under the consultancy services of the Road
Development Authority and is being implemented by the Engineering
Brigade of the Army.
The project which comes under the Negenehira Navodaya is being
financed by the Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development
Ministry on the instruction of Senior Advisor to the President and
Member of Parliament Basil Rajapaksa.
The proposed circular road is also expected to beef up transportation
in the area by linking the following major roads starting from
Trincomalee, Trincomalee-Horowpathana (A-12 road),
Trincomalee-Habarana-Ambepussa (A-06), Trincomalee-Batticaloa (A-15) and
Trincomalee-Pulmudde (B-road).
According to sources, there would be seven sections according to the
master plan and already Rs. 170 million has been spent on the initial
stage with section 1 and 2 (distance 9.8 K.M) been opened for public
from today.
The Circular Road which would soon be open for public use is expected
to accelerate the Governments' development drive after being liberated
from the Tigers clutches. |
