HANWELLA: Several low lying areas in Hanwella have been submerged following water levels of the Kelani river rising due to the torrential rains during the past 48 hours.

Roads underwater in Hanwella.

The water level along the Colombo-Ratnapura low level road is about four feet at Polattawela in Ihala Hanwella. According to Irrigation Department sources, the water level of the Kelani river has risen by 6.36 metres. It is rising at three centimetres per hour.

About 250 families in Ihala Hanwella, Pahala Hanwella, Seevaligama, Walawwatte and Jayaweeragoda areas have been displaced.

The Hanwella Divisional Secretariat, police and Seethavake PS are providing cooked meals to the displaced. Meanwhile, our Maskeliya group correspondent S. Duraisamy reported that all reservoirs in Maskeliya, Dickoya and Norton-bridge have been filled to capacity. People living along river banks were also evacuated to safer areas due to the threat of floods.

The rains have damaged roads and also caused earthslips. Many estates also recorded poor attendance.
