Prof. Peiris briefs Britain on Sri Lankan situation

Peiris had a series of meetings during his official visit to the United
Kingdom with members of the British Government and leading personalities
in the Opposition, a Ministry release said.
He met Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of
International Development Gareth Thomas and Shadow Secretary of State
for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Alan Duncan.
At a meeting with United Kingdom Parliamentarians hosted by the
Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in the House of Commons, Minister
Peiris had discussions with Members of Parliament.
Prof. Peiris pointed out the need for understanding of Sri Lanka’s
position. He explained the steps taken by the Government in straddling
the economy and the political situation, despite the continuing
challenge of terrorism, it said.
He explained the initiatives to revive civil administration in the
Eastern Province, the commencement of public hearings in cases involving
alleged human rights violations, the regular supply of food, medicines
and other essential commodities to the North and a wide range of
humanitarian measures, the release said.
Prof. Peiris also visited the University of Oxford for discussions on
the evolving situation in Sri Lanka.
