Prof. Peiris briefs Britain on Sri Lankan situation

Export Development and International Trade Minister Professor G.L. Peiris had a series of meetings during his official visit to the United Kingdom with members of the British Government and leading personalities in the Opposition, a Ministry release said.

He met Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of International Development Gareth Thomas and Shadow Secretary of State for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Alan Duncan.

At a meeting with United Kingdom Parliamentarians hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in the House of Commons, Minister Peiris had discussions with Members of Parliament.

Prof. Peiris pointed out the need for understanding of Sri Lanka’s position. He explained the steps taken by the Government in straddling the economy and the political situation, despite the continuing challenge of terrorism, it said.

He explained the initiatives to revive civil administration in the Eastern Province, the commencement of public hearings in cases involving alleged human rights violations, the regular supply of food, medicines and other essential commodities to the North and a wide range of humanitarian measures, the release said.

Prof. Peiris also visited the University of Oxford for discussions on the evolving situation in Sri Lanka.
