WHO's latest statistics show that Sri Lankan health sector has
achieved remarkable progress in the recent past and is ahead of other
countries in South Asia, said Premier Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.
The Premier was addressing the National Health Excellence Awards 2007
at the BMICH recently.
Sri Lanka is the only country in the world which provides free health
and education. Other countries charge money from the public for health
and education services.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said Sri Lanka has achieved a
leading place in the health sector among the countries in South Asia and
it is a victory for Sri Lanka to receive such a complement from WHO,
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka said.
He said Sri Lanka is rich in good behaviour and human values. Sri
Lanka could make this achievement due to the strategies implemented by
the Government.
"We have a rich cultural heritage and are popular for hospitality and
caring for elders. The people's lives are centered on religion. The
awards ceremony organised by the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry to
felicitate health staff, is significant during a time social values are
deteriorating," the Premier said.
Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said this awards ceremony
recognises outstanding personnel in the health sector who make indelible
mark through their formidable courage and dedication to the service.
All possible steps will be taken for the advancement of the health
sector.
