Operation on to bust A'pura's illegal abortion clinics

Anuradhapura Police launched a campaign to crackdown on illegal
abortion clinics in the Anuradhapura city and suburbs.
This is being done on the instructions of North Central Province DIG
K.P.P. Pathirana after police received several complaints from the
public regarding abortion centres managed in the cover of medical
centres and private nursing homes which have come up in Anuradhapura.
Police on a tip-off recent by raided a place close to Kada Panaha
junction in the Anuradhapura City and took a retired medical
practitioner, owner of the house and a young woman, alleged to be a
student in a leading school in the area, for questioning.
Several couples in the premises were taken in for questioning. The
suspects have been remanded pending further inquiries.
It is learnt that some illegal abortion centres are in operation in
Pubudupura and Tammennakulama.
Unauthorised practitioners are allegedly charging from Rs. 5,000 to
Rs. 10,000 or more for an illegal abortion.
