Police on a tip-off recent by raided a place close to Kada Panaha junction in the Anuradhapura City and took a retired medical practitioner, owner of the house and a young woman, alleged to be a student in a leading school in the area, for questioning.

Several couples in the premises were taken in for questioning. The suspects have been remanded pending further inquiries.

It is learnt that some illegal abortion centres are in operation in Pubudupura and Tammennakulama.

Unauthorised practitioners are allegedly charging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 or more for an illegal abortion.
