UN Asst. Sec. Gen's visit to strengthen Lanka-UN ties

The purpose of United Nations Assistant Secretary General Angela Kane's visit to Sri Lanka is to focus on the relationship between the United Nations Country Team working in Sri Lanka, and the Government of Sri Lanka, so that the work of the United Nations agencies in Sri Lanka can be more effective, Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha Kohona and United Nations Resident Co-ordinator in Sri Lanka Neil Buhne said in a joint statemen.

"She is visiting upon the invitation of the Sri Lankan Government, and as agreed with the United Nations. The visit is part of her regular responsibilities, and is not as a special envoy of the Secretary General to report on the situation in Sri Lanka.

The clear objective of the visit is to strengthen the relationship between the United Nations and Sri Lanka," they said.
