Pakistan win by 83 runs
CHRIS DHAMBARAGE
Pakistan Under-19 drew first blood as they outplayed the Sri Lanka
Under-19 team by 83 runs in the Tri Series limited overs tournament
opening fixture worked off at the Colts CC ground in Havelock Park
yesterday.
The visitors produced another tremendous batting performance to pile
up a formidable 256 for 5 after being sent into bat and then dismissed
the home side for 173 in 38.3 overs.
The Pakistan batsmen took good use of a superb batting track with
their entire top order making some valuable contributions to boost their
total. Opener Umar Amin played the sheet anchor role with a solid half
century and the rest of the batsmen rallied around him through a couple
of crucial partnerships.
Umar Amin and Umar Akmal first added a splendid 70 run stand for the
third wicket after Sri Lanka had struck twice in successive overs
through Chatura Peiris and Thisara Perera. Middle order batsman Akmal
hit a run a ball 41 with the help of eight boundaries.
Ali Asad joined Amin and the pair further consolidated their position
with another stand of 63 runs for the fourth wicket. Asad played a good
supporting role while stroking six boundaries during his knock of 42.
Umar Amin made certain that his team pass the two hundred run mark
and was fifth out with the score on 213 for a well compiled 68 from 114
deliveries which included five boundaries.
Usman Salahaddin provided the finishing touches for Pakistan with a
sparkling 40 which was studded with one six and three boundaries.
Sri Lanka never looked like making a match of it from the moment they
lost opener Dilshan Munaweera in the very first over of the innings and
were completely out of the contest at 53 for 4 in the 15th over.
In fact Sri Lanka were in real danger of being bowled out for under
one hundred runs before Chatura Peiris rescued them with a hard hit 62
not out from 52 deliveries.
The number ten batsman provided some consolation for the home side by
hoisting four sixes and stroking four boundaries and also added 36 runs
for the ninth wicket together with Ishan Jayaratne.
Pakistan will take on England in another fixture at the same venue
today.
