Bishop warns: Don’t let new technology mislead children
Anthony Fernando Puttalam District Roving Corr.
Parents have a greater responsibility today than ever before over
their children with the new technology coming to their doorstep. if
parents neglect their children and allow them to misuse the new
technology, they could go astray and spoil their future.
The Bishop of Chilaw Rt. Rev. Dr. Valence Mendis conveyed this
message to parents and elders in his sermon at the feast of St.
Sebastian at Katuneriya on Sunday.
The Catholic community celebrated the 125th jubilee of the Church
with His Lordship participating as the chief celebrant of the festive
High Mass. Rev. Frs. Hyacinth Tissera, Saman Kithsiri and Kurukulasuriya

His Lordship said that if children were not brought up well, the
country would suffer and the parents would be blamed for their failure.
“Parents should lead an exemplary life so that their children will go
on the correct path. The Saint whose feast we celebrate gave witness to
Christ. We must also follow the path the Saint had shown when bringing
up our children, the future of this country to live up to our religious
convictions,” the Bishop added.
Referring to the Church dedicated to the worrier Saint, his Lordship
said the Katuneriya Church is one of the most famous churches in the
country. While celebrating the Jubilee, the devotees must commit
themselves once more to live up to the spirit of the ancestors who
handed down the faith to the present day generation.
Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Tissera Parish Priest thanked all those who
assisted in organising the Jubilee celebration of the Church.

Some of the houses built by Caritas Sri Lanka - SEDEC
|
Rev. Fr. Damian Fernando, the National Director, Caritas Sri Lanka -
SEDEC was able to complete and hand over 6,338 houses to tsunami victims
living in different parts of the country within the year 2007 and said
the Organisation was able to hand over 156 to the families living in
Jaffna Peninsula.
“We distributed houses to families at Sakkoddai and Point Pedro East
in Jaffna early this month, ” he said.
Speaking to the Daily News Christian Perspectives Fr. Damian said
that the latest 156 houses handed over to the families in Jaffna were
built by Caritas Jaffna - HUDEC in collaboration with Caritas Sri Lanka
- SEDEC which had the support of Caritas Internationalis.
Fr. Damian disclosed that the Caritas Internationalis had assisted
the tsunami affected people in Sri Lanka not only putting up 6,775
temporary shelters but also provided immediate relief, rehabilitations,
livelihood and trauma counselling and initiated a project to assist to
build 6,539 permanent houses with all facilities for the use of the
families severely affected by the tsunami.
He had told the recipients of the 156 houses in Point Pedro that the
Organisation was able to help the victims because of the initiative,
interest and contributions of Caritas Internationalis, in spite of
various problems that were taking place due to the ongoing ethnic issue
in the North and East.
The SEDEC Director told the Daily News that the SEDEC would be in a
position to hand over 3,000 more houses by March this year for the
benefit of the affected families in the Batticaloa district.
We take pride with modesty being able to commemorate the 3rd year
tsunami disaster by handing over 75 houses at Konespuri in Trincomalee
on December 26, 2007.
Caritas Sri Lanka - SEDEC did not stop by merely putting up of houses
for the affected families but also looked into the needs of the tsunami
victims, such as education, providing help to fisher families with
fishing nets, boats and engines, to go back to fishing and to provide
farmers necessary seeds, manure and other relevant requirements to
restart cultivating the land and to others involved either in various
industries or in self-help employment projects to stand on their own
feet without having to depend on others to live their day-to-day life.
“We have also set up 500 trauma counselling centres with the
participation of 17,680 trainees in all affected areas”, Fr. Damian
added.
Fr. Damian was congratulated by Rev. Fr. C.G. Jeyakumar, Director,
Caritas Jaffna - HUDEC on behalf of Caritas Sri Lanka - SEDEC and
Caritas Internationalis for his commitment in building those houses in
the North with the participation of HUDEC officials and foreign partners
in spite of the problems he and his group had to face during the past
three years to complete this work.
