Govt. releases funds for SLTB salaries

The Government has decided to release additional funds amounting to Rs.39 million monthly from the Treasury to provide an attractive salaries for around 40,000 employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

The decision has been taken on a request made by Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma to salvage the SLTB from the current grave situation by creating a good working environment for its employees whose salary was not increased for the past three years.

A Ministry Spokesman told the Daily News that the salaries with increments will be paid to employees from next month. He said that the employees have been paid lower salaries which has not been increased since the SLTB was peopolised under the UNP regime. He said the measure was aimed at providing relief to workers who had not received due recognition for their service.

"It is useless trying to improve the efficiency of the State transport services, without he solving their administrative problems.

By providing sufficient salaries and modernising and improving SLTB's facilities, the Government intends to provide a comfortable ride to the commuters." the spokesman said.
