Observance of two-minutes silence on National Safety Day

Two-minutes silence will be observed on December 26 from 9.25 to 9.27 a.m. as a mark of respect for all victims of disasters, the Government Information Department said.

The commemoration this year will be held on December 26 in Ratnapura under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.

The National Safety Day will be commemorated on December 26 to create awareness among the public on safety from disasters.


Wet weather today

Intermittent rain will continue over most parts of the island today while heavy falls are also likely at some places, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.

The sea area from Puttalam to Potuvil via Kankesanthurai and Trincomalee will experience intermittent rain, strong winds and rough conditions.


New women’s hostel

The ceremonial opening of the new women’s hostel built by the Moors Islamic Cultural Home at 7, Lily Avenue, Colombo, with financial assistance from the Al Nahiyan Foundation of the United Arab Emirates will be held on December 17 at 5.00 p.m.

Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara and UAE envoy in Sri Lanka, Mahmood Al-Mahmood will be the Chief Guests.

The building, “Sheikha Fatima Building”, named after the donor, H.H. Sheikha Fatima Birth Mubarak is due to efforts of former Sri Lankan envoy to UAE, A.L.M. Samsudeen.


Devotional songs

One Man Show, a musical show of Islamic Devotional Songs by singer and Rupavahini and SLBC artiste Kalaikkamal Jamaldeen Mahudhoom will be held at the Jubilee Hall, Hyde Park Corner, Colombo 2 on December 22 at 6.30 p.m.

These devotional songs will consist of gazzals, songs on Quthbul Hind Ajmeer Khaja Rahmathullahi Alaihi.

This singer has staged musical shows in Switzerland, London and India during his 29 year career in this field. He has also produced CDs.

Invitations can be obtained from the Dewatagaha Sheikh Usman Voliullah Dharga Sheriff Office, Colombo 7.
