SLIIT students win Gold at APICTA

The annual research symposium and career day of the Sri Lanka
Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) was held at the SLIIT Malabe
campus for the third consecutive year yesterday.
Industry and Financial Systems (IFS) and Hewlett Packard (HP)
sponsored the event.

The SLIIT research centre strives to translate research and
development in IT for the betterment of the lives of the people,”
Chairman of SLIIT Prof. Sam Karunaratne said at the opening of the
function. He said the third annual SLIIT research symposium addresses
challenges that lie ahead in building a great future with IT.
The highlight of the research symposium was the novel surveillance
system ‘Video Tripwire’ project which grabbed the gold award at the
prestigious Asia Pacific Alliance Awards (APICTA) recently, beating 15
other nations.
It was also the gold award winner of the National Best Quality
Software Awards (NBQSA) tertiary category which paved the way for SLIIT
to shine at ‘Imagine Cup 2007’ and ‘Techno 2007’.
The team leader of the project, Sukitha Magallage said it is a novel
programme that will be useful to the corporate sector in the future.
The event had about 25 competitive research project demonstrations
from SLIIT students offering information communication and technology (ICT)
related solutions to the IT industry and other ICT related stalls.
“Projects presented today by our students have offered some most
needed IT solutions at present to this fast moving society.
Even though these projects are compulsory in order to obtain the
degree, the overall objective and focus was on bridging the digital
divide for an inclusive society,” said Lalith Gamage, the Chief
Executive Officer of SLIIT.
Some of the other award winning software solutions presented by the
SLIIT students are patient monitoring system, natural language
programming for tool in Sinhala, a vision based system for goal-directed
obstacle avoidance, enabling the visually handicapped with easy
communication, use of information technology in bringing competitive
advantage to the Sri Lankan banking sector and sinhala text speech
engine. |
