The SLIIT research centre strives to translate research and development in IT for the betterment of the lives of the people,” Chairman of SLIIT Prof. Sam Karunaratne said at the opening of the function. He said the third annual SLIIT research symposium addresses challenges that lie ahead in building a great future with IT.

The highlight of the research symposium was the novel surveillance system ‘Video Tripwire’ project which grabbed the gold award at the prestigious Asia Pacific Alliance Awards (APICTA) recently, beating 15 other nations.

It was also the gold award winner of the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) tertiary category which paved the way for SLIIT to shine at ‘Imagine Cup 2007’ and ‘Techno 2007’.

The team leader of the project, Sukitha Magallage said it is a novel programme that will be useful to the corporate sector in the future.

The event had about 25 competitive research project demonstrations from SLIIT students offering information communication and technology (ICT) related solutions to the IT industry and other ICT related stalls.

“Projects presented today by our students have offered some most needed IT solutions at present to this fast moving society.

Even though these projects are compulsory in order to obtain the degree, the overall objective and focus was on bridging the digital divide for an inclusive society,” said Lalith Gamage, the Chief Executive Officer of SLIIT.

Some of the other award winning software solutions presented by the SLIIT students are patient monitoring system, natural language programming for tool in Sinhala, a vision based system for goal-directed obstacle avoidance, enabling the visually handicapped with easy communication, use of information technology in bringing competitive advantage to the Sri Lankan banking sector and sinhala text speech engine.
