The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) has allocated Rs. 19 million
for 2008 to develop the coconut industry targeting a saving of 536
million nuts within the year by way of reducing the wastage taking place
at present.

plan Copra and Coconut oil will be imported temporarily under duty free
concessions to avoid shortage.
He said 35 per cent of the total coconut used domestically are wasted
as a result of not making the maximum use of coconut by housewives.
The long-term plan will be implemented to avoid this situation by
launching a special campaign which will include educating the public,
introducing new technology and encouraging the private sector to
introduce new products.
He said that out of the funds allocated, Rs. 10 million will be
utilised to encourage the private sector and the balance Rs. 9 million
for the new technology and awareness and promotional campaign.
