Senaka's selected works in hard-bound
Senaka Senanayake |
In 1966, when Senaka Senanayake was barely 12 years, Raymond Charmet
of Art et Loisirs Paris made a very significant observation.
"Senaka has produced paintings of extraordinary virtuosity, he said.
His style starting from descriptive realism is evolving towards and
undulating stylization reaching the limits of abstraction where shines a
dynamic and dancing joy thrilling with great Asiatic pantheism. Will he
give us this synthesis of primitive and Western arts which is visibly
the aspiration of our times?"
Forty years later, Harsha Bhaktal traces the journey of this great
artist. Using a simple style and carefully choosing all the important
works ever done by the artist, the book is a tribute to a world class
talent. As Senaka says in the book: "Although war and suffering is
around me all the time I try to paint only the happy and positive
aspects of life, the joy of living."
Says Harsha Bhaktal who is trying to showcase South Asian art to the
world: "This book is in lavish colour, and it celebrates that joy of
living that has driven Senaka's work.
Sri Lankan art is vibrant and alive today, and we want the art
community around the world to notice this." There is a beautiful
Foreword by D. B. Kappagoda. This hard-bound edition beautifully
produced, is available at Vijitha Yapa book stores.
